How to put your Pixel 6a in Do Not Disturb mode

Your Pixel 6a is a communication device like all smartphones and tablets, but there are times when you don’t want to use it that way. There are times when you want to keep it from ringing and interrupting your silence. Whether you’re working, studying, in a meeting, knowing how to put your Pixel 6a into Do Not Disturb (DND) mode is important. Here’s a handy guide to show you how.

What is DND mode?

DND mode isn’t really useful if you don’t know what it is. As the name suggests, Do Not Disturb is a mode where your phone can’t ring and disturb what you’re doing. It is convenient for people who are easily distracted. When this mode is enabled, you will not receive any notifications from apps or other people. Your phone will stay silent – it won’t even vibrate. Also, you will not receive any notification in your notification panel until you turn it off.

How to Enable DND Mode

Now that you know what this mode is, it’s time to learn how to activate it. You can activate this mode in two ways. For starters, the option exists in your quick settings. Swipe down to summon your notification shade, and you should see it as an option. If you don’t see the DND button, tap the little pencil icon on the notification shade (it’ll be in different places depending on whether you have Android 12 or 13).

When you tap the pencil icon, you’ll see the full list of quick settings you can assign. Scroll down and find the Do Not Disturb button. Hold your finger and drag it to a place where you can access it. Once you’ve done that, just tap on the quick setting to activate it.

The other way takes a little longer, but it’s still helpful. You’ll want to summon your notification shade and access your settings. From there, go to Notice setting page. Scroll down and you will see Do Not Disturb settings. Press this button and press the Switch on now button at the top of the page.

Exceptions

You might want to block everything, but there are times when you only want to let a few notifications through. With a few exceptions, you can block notifications for anything but the ones that really matter to you. To do this, you will need to access the DND settings. If you’re using quick setting, just press and hold the button and you’ll be taken to settings. If you browse the notification settings, you were already on this page when you activated it.

Conversations

First, you can excuse certain people’s conversations and calls. Tap the People and you will see three more buttons appear. You will see a page with three options: All Conversations, Priority Conversations, and None. If you want to choose which conversations you want to have, this is where you do it. Hit the gear for the first option if you want to go through all your conversations to find the ones to excuse.

You will see a list of your recent conversations. These can be Slack message conversations or Discord groups you’re in. Just browse and hit the “X” for the conversations you don’t want to miss notifications. Whether you’ve browsed through all conversations or your priority conversations, make sure you’ve selected the right option.

contacts

If you want to excuse certain contacts, go to calls on the People page (the same applies if you go to the posts page). On this page, you can choose which contacts you want to be able to call you with DND mode enabled. You will see four options: Starred Contacts, Contacts, Everyone, None. Favorite Contacts are contacts that you indicate with a star icon. The contacts will only allow calls from numbers you have saved in your contacts. Someone and None are explicit.

If you want only certain contacts to be able to contact you, you can tap the gear icon next to Tracked contacts option, and you will have the option to star contacts.

apps

There are those apps you really need to send notifications even when your phone is in DND mode. That’s why you can allow certain apps to send you notifications. It works much the same way as featured contacts. You build a list of exceptions.

Return to the Do Not Disturb page and navigate to the Applications page. There you can add apps to the exceptions list. When you tap on an app, you’ll see two switches to turn on. The first switch will always say “Allow all notifications”, and the second will vary depending on the app. Tap the second to access that app’s specific notification settings.

Once you’ve created your list, you’ll have refined your list of apps and contacts who can contact you with DND mode enabled.
