The Echoes ending explained, including the truth behind that final twin scene

echoes spoilers follow.

echoes is aptly named because it’s fairly derivative of other trashy mysteries, the kind that Netflix often excels at crafting. But it’s also a lot of fun.

In seven episodes, echoes raises a lot of questions. Would you play swaps if you had a twin? Would you use these wondrous twin powers for good or evil? And above all, who on earth visits Charlie in this final scene?

echoes is meant to be a limited series, so the answers might never come in the form of new episodes. However, after doing some research, we discovered that there were is an answer to this mystery, after all.

But first, a little background.

For most of the series we are led to believe that Leni was the missing twin, but towards the end we find out that it was actually Gina posing as Leni. Classic pairing. Turns out Gina was trying to get out of Leni’s control, but are any of them really “good” people?

All that juicy drama comes to a head in the final episode when Gina and Leni escape their burning childhood home with their dad inside. Again, classic pairing.

It doesn’t take long before the pair end up fighting on the edge of a cliff, because that’s where the fights always happen in these kinds of shows. During all of this, Leni says she was traumatized from watching their father kill their mother when they were younger. However, Gina reveals that their father did it at their mother’s request, as she was already dying of a terminal illness and wanted out on her own terms.

As if that wasn’t dramatic enough, Gina leaps to her death from a waterfall. But is she really dead? Gina’s body is never found, because of course it isn’t.

Now suspected of murder, Leni travels to Australia, but during her escape she encounters someone who says they spotted her recently. Leni doesn’t know this person though, they’ve never met – so it’s safe to assume this stranger has actually seen Gina, who is now alive and hiding somewhere with a new identity.

In a final scene, Gina’s ex-husband Charlie is working on a promotional tour for his new book about twins. A familiar-looking woman dressed in black questions Charlie about the sister who supposedly committed suicide, and he confirms it was Gina.

Arriving home, Charlie sees a woman in the same black dress waiting for him, and he struggles to figure out which twin it is. The woman claims she’s been in the house for an hour, which means she couldn’t have been at the reading too. Unless she was? Dun dun dun!

Charlie tells the woman that he’ll figure it all out eventually, before asking why she finally came back, whoever she is. To which the twin replied, “So many scores to settle, Charlie. I thought I should start with you.”

And that’s all. The screen fades to black and we are none the wiser as to the identity of this twin. Where are we…

Is it Leni or Gina at the end?

If a second season of echoes is never announced, which is likely given that this show was originally billed as a miniseries, will we ever get the answers we need and deserve?

Turns out, yes, we could, because actress Michelle Monaghan, who plays the twins, revealed who she thinks this woman is in the final scene.

“I had to make a creative choice,” Monaghan said Tudum. “So I chose Leni. I think Gina was at the bookstore. I made that choice too.”

So this is it. Both twins are alive, and both twins are wrapped up in Charlie’s life again at the end of the first season. But what does the future hold for Leni and Gina?

As you’d expect, Monaghan only wants the best for both of them.

“I think Gina will definitely have a happy ending – but Gina isn’t the only one. Leni has spent her whole life making things happen for her and her sister, so there’s no way she won’t. don’t fight for your own happy ending.”

And what about Leni?

“I think Leni will have a happy ending too. She’ll find it anywhere. She’ll get there somehow.”

echoes is now available to stream on Netflix.
