Kelli Giddish announced she was leaving the Law & Order: SVU series in an Instagram post Wednesday, ahead of the NBC crime drama’s 24th season this fall.

The 42-year-old actress, who started playing the role of Det. Amanda Rollins during the show’s 13th season in 2011 said she “wanted to respond to the chatter [she’s] seen online and let everyone know that it will, indeed, be [her] last season on Law & Order: SVU.’

The Cumming, Georgia native said she was “so lucky to be part of the Law & Order family for 12 years” and that “playing Rollins has been one of the greatest joys and privileges of [her] life.’

She continued, “There’s just no other character on TV like Rollins. She’s grown and changed, and so have I. I started on this show in my late twenties and I’m grateful for that. having spent so many of my adult years with Rollins in my life.

Giddish thanked show creator Dick Wolf, star/producer Mariska Hargitay, executive producer Peter Jankowski, executive producer Warren Leight, NBC and Universal Television in his statement.

Giddish also thanked his “co-stars, every crew member, and all the writers here for our incredible work together over the past 12 years.”

She added: ‘I’m so excited to take all the things I’ve learned during my time on SVU and put them into everything that’s to come…. #SVU.’

Insiders told Entertainment Weekly that the final episode featuring Giddish will arrive halfway through the show’s next season.

Rollins’ character will go through a traumatic event in the show’s next year, insiders have told TV Line.

David Graziano, the long-running series’ new showrunner, addressed upset fans at the news in the comments section of Giddish’s post, praising the actress for her talent and professionalism.

“You might take a moment to entertain the idea that things are more complex than they appear in a world of emojis and tweets,” he said. “All I will say is that Kelli handled this with the most incredibly classy demeanor.

Giddish made her first appearance on the show during the show’s eighth season in the 2007 episode Outsider.

The news of Giddish’s departure from the show comes as NBC announced that in September it would air a three-hour special incorporating all three active Law & Order series – the original show, SVU and Organized Crime.

Other shows turnovers include the departure of Anthony Anderson for the 22nd season of Law & Order, Mehcad Brooks joining the cast of the show, and Molly Burnett being added to the cast of SVU.
