Morning Report: Dana White ‘already looking at every site in England’ for Leon Edwards vs Kamaru Usman 3

Dana White wastes no time spinning the welterweight title scene.

Last weekend at UFC 278 in Salt Lake City, Utah, the MMA world was turned upside down by a single kick. At the bottom of all three judges’ scorecards heading into the fifth and final round of their rematch, Leon Edwards knocked out Kamaru Usman with just one minute left in the contest. As a result, “Rocky” becomes the second English champion in promotion history behind Michael Bisping.

The score is now a one-piece win between the two best welterweights in the world, and White is ready to make the trilogy fight as soon and as wide as possible.

“This thing is going to be so huge, not just for the UK but for Europe,” White told the media after the Contender series. “We would run it in prime time in the UK. We are looking at all the options available at the moment. We are looking at all sites in England. Not just London, we are looking at all sites in England. We are looking at everything. It there are a lot of curfews and things you have to deal with in England, but we literally worked on that today.

“We had a fight night at the O2 [Arena] and it sells out in minutes. Imagine what we can do with this thing. It’s going to be huge there. We had no intention of returning to England. Like the last time I left England.

After suffering a devastating knockout like Usman did on Saturday night, he was rushed straight to the hospital the night of the fight, avoiding any backstage media appearances. He has since reacted on social media and the night was revealed as the one White faced at the end of his own media appearance.

“We talked, he’s in good spirits,” White said. “Obviously he really wants the rematch, but he said, ‘I can’t tell you the weight that was taken from me. You know, there’s a lot of pressure that comes with the run he was on, tying and breaking Anderson [Silva’s] record, all that, there is a lot of pressure.

“He’s looking forward to the rematch and I also saw Leon today. This kid walks on water and couldn’t get any higher than he is right now.

For Edwards, 30, the win extended his current unbeaten streak to 11 fights, dating back to his third career loss to Usman when they first met in December 2015. Although he lost the vast majority of the rematch, Edwards isn’t too beat up and is ready to get back at it anytime and against anyone.

“He’s down, he’s ready to defend,” White said. “He is ready to face anything. He goes on a whirlwind media tour when he returns home. A lot of things change when you get this belt. His whole world is about to change in the next few weeks, but he’s ready for it.

“Talk about someone who had nothing but bad luck and one of the things we were talking about was – this child accepted Khamzat [Chimaev] fight two or three times, which was unranked. It’s legit, man. This kid is legit. He was ready to fight anyone, anytime, anywhere. He just had a really big streak of bad luck.
