GT500 won’t cut it? Go for Shelby American’s new US$209,000 upgrade to Code Red, the official car of Colonel Nathan R. Jessup

Shelby American’s speed enthusiasts have been satisfying their customers’ need for speed for ages, applying their talents to everything from sports coupes to 4x4s. Now they’ve created the Code Red, a machine using the Ford Mustang GT500 as its base and tuned to a barely believable 1,300 horsepower.

Oh – and they’ll cost US$209,000 per copy. More the price of a GT500. Cheap as chips, then.

Before we go too far, know that the sky-high power output—accompanied by a torque rating of 1000 lb-ft—is only produced when this pony is fed E85 oats. The unique properties of this fuel help boost the Code Red numbers there from “just” 1000 horsepower and 780 lb-ft of torque. These sums are likely to be sufficient in a pinch when only high-test 93 octane can be found.

Touted as more than a drivetrain upgrade, Shelby American also goes to town with wide styling and suspension tuning, as well as interior tuning. Under the hood, they swap out the elite 5.2L supercharged V8 for a twin-turbo system, fitted with custom 10.5:1 pistons and PAC valve springs in addition to other goodies. An intake and intercooler system features a so-called “ice tank” with reservoir, as well as a custom turbo scavenge system and Tial wastegate for entertaining noises. Speaking of which, fans of the F&F The franchise will be pleased to learn that this vehicle is equipped with a MoTeC exhaust system.

The tires are beefy meats, as you’d expect, 30-series hoops with a 305 cross-section up front; and 345 at the rear. These are 20-inch one-piece forged aluminum wheels attached to a suspension gear with height-adjustable front and rear springs. Carbon fiber is scattered like cash at a political convention, appearing on the front splitter and rear diffuser, that pedestal wing and piano-sized hood. There is no back seat.

Shelby American will modify GT500s from model year 2020 through 2022 inclusive, although they say they will only make 10 per production year. I think if someone shows up with a bag of money and a persuasive temper, they’ll walk away in the eleventh copy. After all, Shelby American box handle the truth – which is that, on the eve of total electrification, wealthy gearheads who love their speed will line up for one last crack at internal combustion.
